Beginning a Portrait
Here is an example of the beginning steps of a portrait, taken
from a photo. Marcelle transferred the photo image onto a prepared
panel using a system of grid lines to get exact proportions.
Then a charcoal drawing was done following these grid lines.
The panel was inked over these lines using a wash of India ink
and thin layers of gesso for tone. Then a technique of building
up the gesso into actual three-dimensional areas on the face:
nose, brow, cheeks and chin, were applied. The result is a completed
under painting ready for glazes of color. |

Beginning
"Snacktime"
Snacktime was begun with a drawing on paper which Marcelle
transferred to the canvas Here she is using a charcoal pencil
to darken the lines, in preparation for tone and color. Photos
were also taken of large cuts of cheese, which were then gladly
eaten! |
