The ‘Night of A Hundred Angels’ event will be celestial celebration of worldwide talent featuring an eclectic array of artworks in various media including painting, drawing, sculpture, crafts, and jewelry, as well as digital art. All ideologies dealing with the theme of angels will be represented. Whelan Galleries and The Cottage Gallery are co-sponsors of the show slated for a gala opening in the world famous art community of Laguna Beach on the evening of Saturday, August 20th 2011.

Ten percent of net proceeds from the month long affair will be set aside to benefit the Make-A-Wish-Foundation. Straight donations of any size will also be welcome. Additionally, festivities will include a “live angels” costume competition in which participants will vie for first, second, and third place cash prizes. This portion of the show will begin in downtown Laguna with “angels” showing their costumes and will culminate in North Laguna at the sponsoring Whelan Galleries. The show will feature a diversity of viewpoints and approaches, ranging from traditional to contemporary and beyond. The goal of this presentation is to be both entertaining and inspirational, and to provide art lovers and collectors with a one-of-a-kind colorful, sensuous and riveting cornucopia of artistic treasures to enjoy. A special edition full color "Night of a Hundred Angels” inspirational book showcasing the artists’ works will be published in the Spring of 2012.

Show dates and directions:
The show will be available for public viewing beginning with it’s opening and artist’s reception on Saturday, August 20th 2011 from 6:00 ~ 10:00 p.m. At 8:00 p.m. Angels in costume will start gathering in various locations in the downtown Laguna Beach area, around Ocean Ave, Forest Ave, and the S. How featured oil painting, "On the Breath of Angels" got into the show – it began just a month ago when I was informed of this juried art show. The contest was already in progress, already getting submissions from hundreds of artists worldwide. I had only three weeks away from the deadline to conceive and create a painting of an angel that would meet both my standards and that of the contest’s judges of world-class artists and art professionals.

The contest was in progress when I found out about it already getting submissions from hundreds of artists worldwide. I had only three weeks away from the deadline to conceive and create a painting of an angel that would meet both my standards and that of the contest’s judges of world-class artists and art professionals.

The race was on! I whipped out a canvas I had barely started of another subject and began to transform it into a composition that would work. It was nerve-wracking from the moment I started—I’d never done such a painting on so short a time frame before. I just decided I could do it, and painted on through every meticulous stage. On exactly the last day of the third week I had done it!

I sent the image of it in to the contest. Then it was waiting time. One day I got a call telling me that my angel painting not only had been accepted into the show and to be published in the book, but that it was in the top 11 of the paintings category!

So here it is, my vision of the Angel, titled, “On the Breath of Angels.” This is a 16” x 20” oil painting on linen canvas, gallery-wrapped (unframed: the 1 ¾” sides of the canvas are painted). Old Master techniques were applied, glazing layers of blue and green Cobalts, Ultramarine and Lead-white oils over a rose under-painting to create glowing depth and color that merges into ceruleans and pale blue mists.

You must see the original work (it will be at the Cottage Gallery for the show) to experience the vibrant translucency and emotional impact, not only of the colors, but the aura of the living angel that reaches out to you from within. (Yes, I indeed have attempted to capture a live angel!) This painting will be available for purchase at the show and limited edition prints on canvas and fine art paper will also be available..

Please accept this invitation to come see the show—it will be a transcending event  full of beauty and joy! Here is the event information below, from The Cottage Gallery and Whelan Art Galleries:
